Bamboo in Vietnam
Vietnamese people have used bamboo for hundreds of years as a source of food and tools, as well as for constructing homes and buildings due to its strong and durable material.
Bamboo forests cover approximately 13 percent of Vietnam’s land area, playing a significant role in the country’s economy and landscape. This versatile plant is found in almost every region of Vietnam and has become an integral part of local culture.
In addition to their practical uses, bamboo products hold spiritual significance in Vietnamese culture. Feng shui principles attribute health, love, fortune, prosperity, and luck to the owner of bamboo items, as they are believed to possess positive energy. Furthermore, bamboo represents resilience and the ability to overcome challenges, making it a cherished symbol in Vietnamese life.
From a sustainability perspective, bamboo is classified as a species of grass. Despite this, it grows up to five times faster than most other tree species, reaching maturity in just three years. It can be harvested every two years for up to 40 years, making it an excellent renewable resource.
Harvesting Our Bamboo
- We source each of our bamboo straws from mature and organic bamboo plants in Vietnam, ensuring that only a single stem is used for each straw. Bambu straws are made from 100% pure bamboo, unlike some options on the market that are made from bamboo fibre and other materials.
- Our manufacturer works with local farmers who harvest the bamboo sustainably and without the use of pesticides or chemicals. The raw bamboo is hand-selected before being dried in the sun.
- After being dried, the bamboo stems are rinsed to remove any bark before they are measured and cut into the appropriate lengths and end-cuts (flat or sharp).
